Spring sesshin (intensive retreat) was held at Portsmouth Zendo from May 13 through May 15, 2016. Sesshin was marked by lots of intense sitting and beautiful weather. The traditional sesshin activities were carried out to include: chanting, calligraphy, formal meals, and sanzen (interview with the Roshi). Our new sanzen room on the grounds gave the attendees the opportunity to run to answer their koans.

Our teacher, Tesshin Brand Roshi, of Daiyuzenji Rinzai Zen Temple in Chicago, Illinois presided over sesshin and provided excellent instruction. Paul served as the jiki (time keeper), and tenzo (cook). Dick served as shika (administrator) and sat with grace and dignity as tanto (senior student). Nick was inji (attendant to the Roshi) and handikan (food server).

Thank you to Tesshin Roshi for his continued guidance along the path.

The ceremony was attended by trainees, family and friends, and was followed by a lunch buffet reception. The priest name given to Paul by Tesshin Roshi is Koshin Daiho (Big Mind, Great Way ). Congratulations Rev. Koshin Serrano!
